Chapter 1: Saving a drowning person (1)
”… Just this, thanks for sending this to the Xu House.”
The old lady that was selling pork put the items inside a bamboo basket then passed it to Tang Cheng Cheng, a 16 year old young lady who was waiting just outside her stall. She also didn’t forget to include her delivery fees as well.
“Here you go.”
The thick and long arms lifted the heavy bamboo basket and hung it on the slender shoulders. Tang Cheng Cheng groaned as she felt the weight drop on her shoulders before she straightened it back up again.
“Thank you Aunty Chen.”
Aunty Chen laughed as she turned away after that and continued to pick up another piece of meat for another customer in her stall.
Tang Cheng Cheng didn’t go straight to the Xu House but turned around and headed for the vegetable stall instead.
She had delivered random goods and perform odd jobs for the past two years. Tang Cheng Cheng knew that the rich traders of the Xu household not only had meat delivered to them early in the morning, they also had other things delivered as well like vegetables and other types of food too. Tang Cheng Cheng had asked the trading family to give her this type of delivery work to do. So every time she made a delivery they would give her some money and the stalls would also compensate her for her efforts too. She only needed to use her body’s energy in order to do this.
Tang Cheng Cheng might look small and skinny but she was very strong. The arm that was hidden underneath the narrow sleeves of her clothes were packed with muscles that she had gotten from carrying so much weight.
Tang Cheng Cheng went one round along the stalls at the side of the street to complete the amount of food item orders that the Xu household had given her. She whistled a tune then headed in fast strides towards the big mansion of the Xu household.
The lady chef checked over all the goods that Cheng Cheng had delivered over and found that everything was in order then signed the delivery form. She picked up the now empty basket and then quickly rushed towards the Li household to do her deliveries.
The Li and Xu families were the town’s two richest trading households. The Li family’s main business was in shipping logistics while the Xu family was involved in supplying wholesale goods to the northern and southern region of the country. Both families were tied closely together in business related matters and so the 22 year old Li Haijiao and Xu’s family 16 year old Xu Zhiqian were always paired together as a couple by the public. If the engagement went through without a hitch, it would be fish helping the water and the water helping the fish situation. Their wealth would grow exponentially as their families’ wealth combined.
There were more members in the Li household than Xu household, so it was not enough to make the delivery only once and she at least had to do it twice. When Tang Cheng Cheng finished sending all the pending orders, she passed on the signed delivery forms to all the stores. By the time she finished doing that, the sun had shone so brightly that one had to squint their eyes to protect their vision from the blinding light.
She swung the bamboo basket that now held only one carrot and headed back home. Once she reached home, she carefully put her working items in the storage room beside the back door entrance, then hugged her carrot and went into the back porch to pick some vegetables from her garden. After that, she finally walked into the kitchen to scoop up some rice to cook porridge for breakfast.
A delicious waft of the porridge bubbling filled the kitchen and it was about time for the rest of her family members to wake up as well.
She had one younger brother and two little sisters in her Tang household. Her mother had already passed early on, so she took up the position of being their maternal support by looking after them and cooking three meals a day to feed them. Now she also worked early in the morning to contribute to their financial needs.
Father Tang leaned on his walking stick and limped out of his room. When her second little sister, Tang Luo Luo saw her father coming in, she immediately went up to assist him to sit down.
2 years ago, Father Tang was unfortunately involved in a carriage accident that had crushed his thighs so now it was hard for him to walk properly. The carriage belonged to the Li family and they paid for her father’s medical expenses then. They had settled the incident then and there and wanted to just leave it in their past. Yet Father Tang, the sole breadwinner of the family, could no longer work in his carpentry work because of the major injury that he had sustained on his thighs. They had settled the matter early on so now they had no more reason to barge into the Li family household. This made the practical Tang Cheng Cheng stubbornly justify that she had to find a new job to feed the family, so she started working at the laundry room. Her family of five then relied on her delivery fees and Li Family’s salary provision to survive.
Last year, her little brother Tang Bo Hong started to help out in his father’s old workplace, so now he was also a Trainee carpenter. Tang Cheng Cheng estimated that in a few years, he might be able to advance and become a professional carpenter. By that time, it would be time for him to get married as well.
Tang Cheng Cheng hurriedly slurped up her porridge without even sitting down on the chair. She wiped off the fluids her porridge had left behind then told her little sisters to get rid off the bugs in their vegetable garden. She then cleaned up the chicken poop and put it aside for her father to use as fertilizer for the plants then changed to a new set of clean clothes and rushed out to start her work in the Li Mansion.
The moon had now risen to the apex of the sky when Tang Cheng Cheng finally finished her busy day of work and was finally prepared to go back. She was busily picking up her stuff when the Mrs. Wu walked into the ironing room with a heavy expression and looked worriedly at her face.
