But I fell in love with You

Chapter 85: Climbing the stairs

**Disclaimer: No violence but there will be some mentioning of the Taoist-Buddhist customs. I’m not here to spread any religion nor am I interested to. There will be a description of how one of the custom goes, so if you don’t want to read it, please skip chapter 85 and 86. I won’t provide a summary because it does still describe this custom and I have no idea how I can avoid mentioning it. So enjoy!!**

Huo Yixuan's eyes were too persistent and serious when he made that remark. Yang Nainai suddenly felt the words getting stuck inside her throat and lost the ability to deny that fact as she faced him.

She wanted to give him a dismissive laugh and say that he’s now acting like one of those domineering CEO in a drama, but how could she help herself when he was like this. This version of Huo Yixuan just made her heart beat faster, as her senses caused havoc like a little deer knocking everything in its path to escape. It was as if he had hypnotized her in a trance so deep that she could only obey his silent command and nod under his enchantment.

Huo Yixuan picked up the wet wipes and cleaned up her body lovingly, then dipped his head down low to kiss her button nose,

"Nainai, I'll take you somewhere now."

"Where are we going?"

"Dajue Temple."

Yang Nainai was still locked in his hazy enchantment when they arrived at Dajue Temple. This place had at least a hundred years of history since it was first built and was famous for couples who wanted to seek blessings to intertwine their marriage fates together.

She just found the whole situation a bit too strange as she didn’t expect Huo Yixuan to be superstitious enough to do this with the kind of temperament he had shown her so far.

Huo Yixuan opened the car door for her, then grasped her hand tightly as they walked towards the foot of the mountain.

There were one hundred and eight steps leading up to the main temple. The legend says that if you want to link your marriage fate with your partner, the man must complete climbing all of the one hundred and eight steps while carrying the woman on his back.

This symbolized how determined the man is to become the pillar of support of the woman for the rest of their life together. When he completes it, he will willingly carry all the burdens that the woman has on his shoulders in the future.

"Come on, I'll carry you."

Huo Yixuan had already squatted down in front of her, but Yang Nainai hesitated.

Her head raised up to glance at the long line of stairs as she scrunched her brows and shook her head in refusal,

"I'm too heavy, you'll exhaust yourself if you have to climb so far to reach there."

Huo Yixuan took her hand and asked,

"Nainai, are you not willing to intertwine your fate with mine and spend the rest of our life being together forever?"

"No, I’m willing to do that."

"Then let me carry you up there."

Huo Yixuan still persisted on his determination to do this, and had set this as the most important ceremony he must complete to be together with her.

Yang Nainai was still uneasy as she turned her worried gaze on him.

"Then did you also know that you cannot stop halfway and put me down at all when you start climbing this staircase?"

"Of course I know that."

Huo Yixuan only gave her a fond smile. No words could shake his determination when he had set his mind towards it.

Yang Nainai tried to persuade him again,

"Why don't I go back to lose some weight before coming back here to do this next time?"

She was really afraid that she would crush him.

Huo Yixuan got up. He can’t help wanting to kiss those plush lips that she was worrying on with her teeth as his heart was filled with all the adoration he had for her, while he pitied her for being so unsettled on this.

"Nainai, what are you afraid of?"

"Ah? I... I'm afraid that I'm too heavy and I'll tire you out before you’re even able to complete this. If you can't last till the end, wouldn’t it become a bad omen to our relationship?"

Huo Yixuan just stared on her fidgeting self as he stayed silent. There was a quiet storm brewing dangerously in his eyes, and the corners of his lips were tilted in sarcasm.

Yang Nainai felt guilt flooding inside her soul and hurriedly tried to soften the blow of her words.

"Aiya, my Aunt Flo is still here so it’s not that appropriate for me to come to the temple at this time anyway. Why don't we just come back here another day?"

She turned around and was about to leave when Huo Yixuan suddenly grabbed her collar then lifted her up in a princess carry[1].

"Ah, don't mess around!"

Yang Nainai's shocked shriek attracted the stares of a few passerby. They smiled knowingly when they saw the noise coming from the young couple that was having a little argument.

Huo Yixuan had set his heart on climbing up the stairs with her in his arms so he told her,

"I’ll give you two choices. I'll either carry you up there like this, or piggyback you instead. Which one do you think is more tiring for me? Do you wanna test if I’ll really do it?"

If he carried her like this, then his arms would just hang down limply when they reached the top.

Yang Nainai hurriedly quipped up,

"The piggyback, the piggyback, okay? I’m agreeing to let you do this so put me down for now."

Huo Yixuan chuckled in delight as he kneeled once more to let her climb up his back, then strode forward without any hesitations.

Yang Nainai fidgeted behind him as she gnawed on her lips worriedly and this caused Huo Yixuan to give her a light slap on her supple behind.

"Don't move, if I lose my balance then you’ll send us both tumbling down the stairs."

Yang Nainai immediately settled down and tried not to breathe so hard.

Huo Yixuan's steel-like body moved up the stairs swiftly like he possessed some kind of superhuman strength.

When the passerby saw them, some of them couldn’t help recording a video of them on their phones. They felt that it was really rare for men to be willing to attempt this kind of challenge nowadays.

Yang Nainai lowered her head and whispered beside his ear,

"Are you really that willing to be with me for a lifetime?"

Huo Yixuan asked back, "What’s the matter? Don’t you want to be with me for the rest of your life?"

"Yes, I want that, but... I'm just...that is..."

Yang Nainai stammered as she no longer knew how to express the worries in her heart. Huo Yixuan just continued on her words for her.

"I understand. I know that you’re afraid because we are both too young right now. You think I’m too impulsive, and may soon regret this, right?"

Yang Nainai just nodded and murmured a short ‘yes’.

Huo Yixuan let out a sigh and said,

"You have to believe me, Nainai!"

Doubts still plagued her heart.

"But in today’s society, men's promises no longer hold as much weight as it did in the past. Although we’re so in love with each other right now, what about the future? A human’s heart is fickle when it comes to this so, pray tell, how long can you even love me?”

Huo Yixuan's eyes were so determined as he aimed his sights on the high temple gates ahead.

"When I tell you a lifetime, I really mean a lifetime. You have been my wife since the first day we became a couple together. You have to spend eternity by my side even when we both die one day."

Sweetness filled every corner inside Yang Nainai’s heart as her lips crept up at the corners into a brilliant smile. She felt that this moment must probably be the happiest moment in her whole lifetime. No matter how difficult the road was ahead of them, she would dedicate herself and be next to him, be it in sickness or in health.

"You promised me so you have to be good to me for the rest of your life, okay? You can't change your mind or fall in love with another person in the future too!"

Huo Yixuan only lowered his tone and added in that husky voice of his,

"I want to spend the rest of our lives f cking you!"

Yang Nainai's horrified eyes widened as her fist raised to hit him lightly.

“The grounds of Buddhist temple is a sacred place, so you can’t speak such nonsense. What should we do if the Buddha gets angry?”

Huo Yixuan only chuckled,

In the seven major emotions, six are the external desires, that put hunger for food, desire for love and l u s t s as natural processes of being a normal human being[2]. Heaven was the one who granted me the right to desire my wife’s body so Buddha can’t say that I have sinned in this case.”

Yang Nainai tightened her arms around his neck as she smiled at him adoringly. Her heart was full now and she only wished that she could just hug his body like this forever.

When the couples next to them saw their exchange, the girl just became really envious of them. She then pinched her boyfriend and said,

"Look at them. I don’t care, no matter what, you must carry me on your back till we reach the top today."

The boyfriend just gave her an ugly scowl when she didn’t stop that constant nagging as she walked next to him.

“I’ll definitely have to give up halfway. Can you not be so superstitious and join in such farce?"

She stomped sharply on his feet when she heard his words, saying that he lied when he told her he loved her.

In the end, several guys had to climb up those grueling steps with their girlfriends on their backs while almost every man on the scene cursed furiously at Huo Yixuan.

Huo Yixuan didn't even care. He was just satisfied that he got to carry Yang Nainai while his steel determination never faltered as he ascended every one of those steps to the temple.

His will was so powerful that he never even missed even one of those 108 staircase nor did he slow down throughout the whole journey. He just held on his breath until he reached the front of the temple gates.

Yang Nainai waited until the finish line before telling him to let her down, but Huo Yixuan refused her and carried her straight into the temple. It was only when he arrived in front of the Buddha statue, that he let her climb down his back, only to then press her down to kneel there.

"You should be tired, right? I'll go get some water for you."

Yang Nainai’s only thought was to get him some water to drink, but Huo Yixuan just firmly pushed her down on her knees in front of the Buddha.

Yang Nainai was puzzled at his actions. She then saw Huo Yixuan bringing a few sticks of incense and lit them before handing them to her.

"We need to swear before the Buddha so that we can remain next to each other forever."

Huo Yixuan's steel resolve in this went far beyond her expectation of him. It was obviously just a superstition, but when he did it like this, it became a law that she wanted to abide. She felt that she had to obey his orders or else the heavens might just punish her one day.

Yang Nainai just followed what he did as she kowtowed together with him and prayed. She went through the whole ceremony with a sincere heart to ask the heavens to bless them both so they’ll get married one day.

When Huo Yixuan had stuck both their incense in the prayer pot, he wrapped his arms around her body then said,

"Okay, now that we both hung up our promises in front of the Buddha, you’ll remain my wife even after we die and arrive at the Yan Luo palace[3] in our afterlife."

Yang Nainai couldn't help herself but gave him a light tap on his chest. Her heart was overloaded with sugary sweetness as the two of them went out the hall and saw a place to ask about their destiny.

Yang Nainai went back to draw the lots[4] and got a number 36 on her stick. She then went back to the temple’s destiny reader to get an understanding on the riddle for her number.

The destiny reader glanced at both of them, then gave them both a deep psychic’s faraway stare.

"Little girl, what are you asking for?"

"Of course it’s about our marriage fate."

The reader paused for a long while before fishing out the corresponding riddle for her number. He then frowned.

"What's the matter, is it bad?" Yang Nainai became nervous all of a sudden.

The reader smiled apologetically, "Not really, it's just..."

He looked at Huo Yixuan then glanced at Yang Nainai, and said,

"This destiny number can be considered a good one, but I’m afraid that your marriage will be filled with some twists and turns."

It’s when a guy carries a girl by putting one arm behind her back, while the other hand support the back of her knees. Ah… I love this pose when its drawn in mangas. Personally I just can’t relax when I’m carried like this.

(b) 食色性也: The want for food and lusts are natural desires of a healthy human being.

Basically how this goes is that you have to silently ask your question inside your heart while kneeling before the Buddha or any other Taoist gods that you are praying to. Once you are done, you shake the container of sticks like the picture above until one stick falls to the ground. There will be a number on top of that stick.

Next you have to take the kidney like two red objects above. They are called 筊杯, Shiao Bei (cups). It has a flat side and a rounded side. You have to hold them up in front of the buddha and ask whether your stick is correct or not, then toss them on the ground. If both cups land on different sides like the picture, then your stick number is correct. If both lands on the rounded sides then the buddha is laughing at you, both flat sides simply means “No”. If its the latter two, then draw the lots again.

You need to then go to the destiny reader and they will take out the riddle paper like the white paper above. The top will indicate whether its double ups, up, middle, down or double down destiny. Double up riddles are the best numbers to draw and it goes downhill from there.

The paper generally gives you a riddle written in classical Chinese in which you can kind of guess the meaning to if you are fluent in Chinese. If not, there is always the reader who sits somewhere in the temple. You’ll have to pay them after they debunk it for you though.
